Akoma Ntoso Foundation is a nonprofit partnership between American and Ghanaian volunteering groups.

Mark your calendars. 🗓️ Our next outreach trip to Mark your calendars. 🗓️

Our next outreach trip to Central Region, Ghana is set for January 6–16, 2027.

For 10 days, our team of clinical and non-clinical volunteers will work alongside the local community — running clinics, treating patients, and building on relationships we've spent years cultivating. This isn't a one-time visit. It's part of a long-term commitment to a community we've chosen to stay with.

If you've been waiting for the right moment to join us — this is it.

We're looking for physicians, nurses, APPs, pharmacists, dentists, pre-clinical students, educators, and general support volunteers. No prior international experience required — just a willingness to serve, learn, and show up with humility.

📍 Ataabadze, Central Region, Ghana

We met Shadrack in Ampenyi in July 2023. He was 8 We met Shadrack in Ampenyi in July 2023. He was 8 years old, and he was very sick.

His belly was swollen — his spleen and liver enlarged. His hemoglobin was a 4. He had a fever from malaria that wouldn’t break.

Our team got him to the local hospital for emergency blood transfusions. That’s when we learned what was really going on: Shadrack has sickle cell anemia.

ANF covered his hospitalization. We connected him to the sickle cell clinic at Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, where he still goes regularly for care. Two months later, when he needed an urgent splenectomy, donations from people like you made that surgery possible too.

But Shadrack’s story didn’t end in the hospital. Years of chronic illness meant he’d fallen behind in school. So ANF funded private tutors and school tuition — because catching up matters just as much as getting well.

Today, Shadrack is thriving. Not because of one lucky outreach day, but because a community of donors and volunteers stayed with him — through the transfusions, the surgery, and every school day since.

This is what sustainable care looks like.

Not a single visit, but a relationship that lasts as long as it needs to.

There are more kids like Shadrack in Ampenyi and the surrounding communities right now. Your gift helps us stay with them too.

You don’t need to be a doctor or a nurse to serve with us. We need educators and translators and people willing to show up and work hard. If “healthcare in West Africa” has ever crossed your mind as something you want to be a part of- this is your sign. On the very first day of our outreach, in the comm On the very first day of our outreach, in the community of Egyiekrom, we met Thomas, an eleven year old boy who came to us with a swollen belly. Two years prior, he had woken up one morning having had lost his sight. His mother was able to gather up funds to take him to the eye clinic. The doctor who saw him there referred him to the major children’s hospital in Accra for management of increased intracranial pressure that was the cause of his blindness.

After a surgery where the neurosurgeons placed a tube called a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt (VPS) to bypass the fluid accumulating in his brain to his belly where it will be reabsorbed.

For reasons we still do not understand, the lining of the abdomen did not reabsorb the fluid and he started to swell. After a few months, his mother returned him to the hospital in Accra, far from their village, for treatment. Not much help was provided and they were discharged after three months for inability to pay.

When we met Thomas, he was emaciated, blind, and very very swollen. Akoma Ntoso Foundation moved quickly and arranged for transportation and admission to Cape Coast Teaching Hospital where inpatient care was re-established. He underwent multiple tests and imaging as the doctors attempted to determine what was the cause of the condition and how to help him.

On Thursday, Thomas spent the day in the operating room. His recovery from the surgery was complicated and this morning, Thomas succumbed to his illness.

We at Akoma Ntoso Foundation are devastated to relay this news as we transition from life-saving appeal to burial fundraising. Please help us help his grieving mother settle the hospital bill, recover her son’s body, and give him a proper burial.

Rest in peace Thomas.

We have started a fundraiser to help his family out. Please share and do what ever your heart tells you too.

Walking through Elmina Castle is a powerful remind Walking through Elmina Castle is a powerful reminder of a painful chapter in history. It was once one of the largest transatlantic slave-trading forts in West Africa where millions of enslaved Africans suffered unimaginable pain. Today it stands as a memorial to the millions whose lives were forever changed and a tells a story the world must never forget.
